Analogies and Correspondences Between Variograms and Covariance Functions

چکیده
Variograms and covariance functions are key tools in geostatistics. However, various properties, characterizations, and decomposition theorems have been established for covariance functions only. We present analogous results for variograms and explore the connections to covariance functions. Our ndings include criteria for covariance functions on intervals, and we apply them to exponential models, fractional Brownian motion, and locally polynomial covariances. In particular, we characterize isotropic locally polynomial covariance functions of degree 3.

A New Class of Spatial Covariance Functions Generated by Higher-order Kernels
Covariance functions and variograms play a fundamental role in exploratory analysis and statistical modelling of spatial and spatio-temporal datasets. In this paper, we construct a new class of spatial covariance functions using the Fourier transform of some higher-order kernels. Moreover, we extend this class of spatial covariance functions to the spatio-temporal setting using the idea used in...
متن کاملOn the Validity of Commonly Used Covariance and Variogram Functions on the Sphere
Covariance and variogram functions have been extensively studied in Euclidean space. In this article, we investigate the validity of commonly used covariance and variogram functions on the sphere. In particular, we show that the spherical and exponential models, as well as power variograms with 0 < α ≤ 1, are valid on the sphere. However, two Radon transforms of the exponential model, Cauchy mo...
متن کاملMultivariate Analysis and Spatial/Temporal Scales: Real and Complex Models
Comparing different scales in space or time the correlation between regionalized quantities can change substantially. Coregionalization models incorporate a description of the variation and covariation of a set of variables at different characteristic scales either in space or in time. Such models can be used as a device to explore the structure of multivariate spatial or temporal data in the f...
متن کاملNew Anisotropic Covariance Models and Estimation of Anisotropic Parameters Based on the Covariance Tensor Identity
Many heterogeneous media and environmental processes are statistically anisotropic, that is, their moments have directional dependence. The term range anisotropy denotes processes that have variograms characterized by direction-dependent correlation lengths and directionally independent sill. We distinguish between two classes of anisotropic covariance models: Class (A) models are reducible to ...
متن کاملQuotient spaces and statistical models
The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the widespread occurrence of quotient spaces in statistical work. Quotient spaces are intrinsic to probability distributions, residuals and interaction in linear models, covariance functions and variograms of stochastic processes, etc. The theme is that explicit recognition of the quotient space can offer surprising conceptual simplification. Th...
